Miriam Gogarty

This teachers page is a bit different than the rest of our teachers pages.  Because of the unique circumstances that lead Miriam to our site.  Let me tell you a bit more about how I met Miriam and how she became a part of our team.

You see Miriam and I are members of the same online group.  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/learningfa/ This is a group of fibre artists who share their knowledge with one another.  It is a teaching group.  Miriam posted a special pattern called "Emma's Tree" for the members and it really caught my attention.  Not because of the pattern it's self but because of the story behind it.

I would like to share the story behind Emma's Tree Pattern with you now. 

EMMA'S TREE.......THE STORY........

My daughter Emma was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 8 months pregnant with her second baby.  While she was doing well I was away on a trip and saw a lovely tree made of velvets and brocades, embroidered and trimmed with embellishments.

She was soon unwell again and as I couldn't sleep at night.  I often spent hours in my sewing room just cutting fabric........I decided to make a simpler version of the tree that I had seen when I was away.

I made the first one for Emma and so it is called Emma's Tree.

Emma died when she was only 29 years old.  Her baby was only 1 year and 2 months and her older baby was just 2 years and 2 months.  I made Emma's Trees for my four other children and of course one for me.

The following Christmas I made some for other family members and then decided to share the pattern with fabric card groups that I am a member of........I really loved the idea of Emma's Trees being made in many countries and being in other family homes over the Christmas holidays.

I know that there are trees made in America, Canada, The UK, Norway, Australia, and Turkey and of course many here in Ireland.

I would like everyone to call their tree - Emma's Tree so that her memory just goes on and on.....around the world.  She would have loved this story........
